They’re an excellent choice for small farms and backyard flocks, thriving in both free-range and contained setups.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOne of the most appealing traits of the Welsummer is that they are autosexing, meaning males and females can often be distinguished at hatch by the colour and pattern of their down. While this can make it easier to identify pullets early on, it is not an exact science — especially with the natural colour variation in Welsummers.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAutosexing in this breed is typically about 70–75% accurate. We do our best to identify and remove any chicks with clearly male down markings, which increases the chances that you’ll receive mostly pullets. However, some cockerels will still make their way through, so we can’t guarantee female chicks. The autosexing simply gives a higher likelihood of pullets, not a promise.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWelsummers are friendly, intelligent, and active birds that enjoy foraging and make wonderful free-range companions.
