Welsummer Chickens

Welsummers are a cheerful, hardy, and strikingly beautiful breed — known for their golden-brown feathers, friendly temperaments, and richly coloured eggs. They’re an excellent choice for small farms and backyard flocks, thriving in both free-range and contained setups.

One of the most appealing traits of the Welsummer is that they are autosexing, meaning males and females can often be distinguished at hatch by the colour and pattern of their down. While this can make it easier to identify pullets early on, it is not an exact science — especially with the natural colour variation in Welsummers.

Autosexing in this breed is typically about 70–75% accurate. We do our best to identify and remove any chicks with clearly male down markings, which increases the chances that you’ll receive mostly pullets. However, some cockerels will still make their way through, so we can’t guarantee female chicks. The autosexing simply gives a higher likelihood of pullets, not a promise.

Welsummers are friendly, intelligent, and active birds that enjoy foraging and make wonderful free-range companions. They’re also known for their soft voices and calm presence, getting along well with most breeds in a mixed flock.

Their eggs are one of their most distinctive features — large and beautifully coloured in shades ranging from light brown to deep terracotta, sometimes speckled with darker spots. Each hen’s eggs are a little different, making every basket a warm mix of earthy tones.

Welsummers typically begin laying around 20–24 weeks of age (5–6 months) and produce an average of 200–250 eggs per year, depending on diet and daylight.

💙 A Note on Straight-Run Chicks

Although Welsummers are autosexing, we still offer them as straight-run chicks. Even with visual differences at hatch, accuracy isn’t high enough to guarantee sexing without stress to the chicks.

We do not vent-sex our birds — it’s uncomfortable and risky for day-olds. Our goal is always the wellbeing of each chick from hatch to home.

If you need guaranteed hens, we recommend exploring our other autosexing or sex-linked breeds that offer higher visual accuracy.

Roosters, when raised ethically, make excellent flock protectors and companions, and can also be raised for meat or pet food. They’re often some of the most loyal and affectionate birds on the farm.
