🤍 Delaware Chickens
Delawares are a classic American heritage breed known for their versatility, gentle nature, and dependable productivity. Originally developed as a dual-purpose farm bird, they were bred to provide both a steady supply of eggs and a practical option for homegrown meat, making them a favourite for small farms and backyard flocks focused on self-sufficiency.
At Tevah Acres, our Delawares have consistently been some of the sweetest birds in the flock. They are calm, friendly, and easy to work with, often becoming one of the most approachable breeds on the farm. Their easygoing temperament makes them a wonderful choice for families, mixed flocks, and anyone looking for a steady, well-balanced homestead bird.
Delawares are considered a true dual-purpose breed. While they are not the largest or fastest-growing meat bird compared to modern broiler types, they do produce a respectable carcass. Many families choose to raise the roosters for meat, typically allowing them to grow out a little longer, around 18–20 weeks, for better size and development.
The hens are reliable layers of medium to large brown eggs and are known for steady production throughout the year. They usually begin laying around 20–24 weeks and continue well once mature, making them a practical choice for those wanting both eggs and occasional meat birds from the same flock.
Their appearance is clean and striking — bright white feathers with distinctive black barring around the neck and touches of black in the tail. They have a sturdy, balanced build and a confident but gentle presence in the yard.
Delawares are active and capable foragers, doing well on pasture and in free-range settings. They adapt nicely to a variety of climates and tend to be hardy, practical birds that fit naturally into a working farm environment.
Whether you’re building a backyard flock, working toward greater food independence, or simply looking for a kind, steady breed that serves more than one purpose, Delawares are a beautiful and dependable addition.
💙 A Note on Straight-Run Chicks
All our Delaware chicks are straight-run, meaning they are not sexed at hatch. We do not vent-sex our chicks, as it’s stressful and can cause harm to day-old birds. Our goal is always the wellbeing of each chick from hatch to home.
If you prefer guaranteed hens, we recommend checking out our sex-linked breeds, which offer higher visual accuracy.
Roosters grow into handsome, alert birds with strong presence and classic black-and-white colouring. They can be raised out for meat or kept as flock guardians, depending on your needs and setup.
