Ebony Cross Chickens
Our Ebony Cross chicks are one of our own Tevah Acres custom sex-linked crosses, developed for beauty, resilience, and practicality. They are a cross between our Silver Barred Giant hens and Welsummer roosters, making them an excellent choice for anyone wanting productive layers with rich colouring and adaptable personalities.
Selected for females—not guaranteed
Because they are sex-linked, males and females can often be distinguished at hatch by their down colour. Female chicks typically hatch dark—usually black or deep brownish-black—while males generally show lighter markings.
We select for females, but colour sexing is not perfect. Your order may include roosters, and we cannot guarantee that every chick will be female. Please consider this possibility when ordering, particularly if you cannot keep males. We do not vent-sex our chicks.
Beautiful, practical homestead birds
As adults, the hens have deep ebony or black plumage, sometimes with golden or copper accents around the neck and feather tips. They are active foragers that enjoy pasture and free-ranging, while also adapting well to a contained coop and run.
Their generally easygoing personalities make them a welcome addition to a mixed flock. These are substantial birds, and any males that do occur can also be raised for meat.
Hens typically begin laying around five to six months of age, depending on season, feeding, and individual development. They produce nicely sized eggs in a variety of brown shades, from light brown to darker brown, with some hens laying speckled eggs. The Welsummer influence brings welcome variety to the egg basket, although colour and speckling will vary between hens.
They can lay around five eggs per week during their productive season.
