Tevah Ebony Dual-Purpose Chicks
A true-breeding dual-purpose chicken developed for families who want dependable eggs, excellent meat, and a sustainable flock that can be reproduced year after year.
The Tevah Ebony Dual-Purpose is the maternal line behind our Mistral Gris breeding program and one of the most practical birds on our farm.
Originally selected for hardiness, dependable laying, and efficient growth, these birds have become the foundation of our breeding program. While they were developed as one half of the Mistral Gris cross, they also stand confidently on their own as an outstanding dual-purpose chicken for homesteads and small farms.
Unlike the Mistral Gris hybrid, the Tevah Ebony Dual-Purpose breeds true, allowing you to hatch future generations from your own flock.
Why We Love Them
- Excellent dual-purpose birds for both meat and eggs.
- Hardy and adaptable in a wide range of climates.
- Faster growing than many traditional heritage breeds.
- Reliable brown egg layers.
- Breed true generation after generation.
- Strong, practical birds well suited to homesteads and family farms.
- The maternal line behind our Mistral Gris breeding program.
Meat & Growth
The Tevah Ebony Dual-Purpose grows more quickly than most traditional dual-purpose breeds while maintaining a nicely balanced frame.
They won’t finish quite as quickly as the Mistral Gris hybrid, but they produce an excellent table bird with rich flavour and a carcass well suited to the family freezer.
Because these birds have dark feathering, they don’t pluck quite as cleanly as the Mistral Gris. You may notice a few darker feather follicles after processing, but for most backyard growers this is a very small trade-off for such a hardy, productive bird.
Egg Production
These hens are dependable, consistent brown egg layers and form the heart of our Mistral Gris breeding flock.
They’re exactly the type of bird many homesteads are looking for: productive enough to keep eggs in the kitchen while also raising excellent meat birds.
The Maternal Line Behind Mistral Gris
Every Mistral Gris chick begins with two carefully maintained parent lines.
The Tevah Ebony Dual-Purpose contributes much of the hardiness, rapid early growth, dependable laying ability, and hybrid vigour that has made the Mistral Gris such a successful cross.
When paired with our Silver Barred Giant line, the result is the Mistral Gris hybrid that so many of our customers have come to love.
Choose Your Breeding Flock
All birds are sold as straight-run chicks (unsexed). While nature never offers guarantees, our hatches are typically very close to a 50:50 ratio of hens to roosters.
🏡 Homestead Breeding Flock (25 chicks)
Perfect for families wanting to establish a sustainable backyard breeding flock.
A typical hatch will result in approximately 12 to 13 hens and 12 to 13 roosters. Once mature, this flock has the potential to hatch approximately 25 to 35 chicks per week during the spring breeding season.
🚜 Small Farm Breeding Flock (50 chicks)
Ideal for small farms planning to hatch chicks for customers or expand beyond family use.
A typical hatch will result in approximately 25 hens and 25 roosters. Once mature, this flock has the potential to hatch approximately 50 to 75 chicks per week during the spring breeding season.
🌾 Production Breeding Flock (100 chicks)
Designed for farms intending to hatch larger numbers of chicks throughout the spring.
A typical hatch will result in approximately 50 hens and 50 roosters. Once mature, this flock has the potential to hatch approximately 100 to 150 chicks per week during the spring breeding season.
A Few Notes
- Chicks are sold straight run (unsexed).
- Hatch rates and chick production vary depending on fertility, management, nutrition, incubation practices, and the season.
- Weekly production estimates are intended as planning guides rather than guarantees.
- Looking for a custom hatch or a larger breeding flock? We’d be happy to discuss options with you.
Whether you’re looking for an outstanding dual-purpose bird, a sustainable breeding flock for your homestead, or the maternal line needed to produce your own Mistral Gris, the Tevah Ebony Dual-Purpose is a practical, productive, and proven foundation.
