Caramel Queen Chickens
Caramel Queens are a beautiful and practical choice for any backyard or small farm. They are friendly, calm, and excellent egg producers — a wonderful option for families wanting reliable layers with lovely colouring and temperament.
These birds are sex-linked, meaning males and females can often be distinguished at hatch by their down colour. This makes them one of the best options for those hoping to raise mostly pullets, with an estimated accuracy of about 85 %. However, it’s still not an exact science — and you should expect that some roosters may still be included in each order. We do our best to identify and remove any chicks with clear male markings, but there’s always natural variation in the hatch.
Caramel Queens are a cross between Light Sussex and Welsummer, originally developed in England over a century ago. The result is a charming, productive bird that combines the best of both breeds — the calm and adaptability of the Sussex with the rich egg colour and foraging ability of the Welsummer.
Their eggs range in colour from medium to dark brown, sometimes speckled, with many hens producing a warm caramel shade true to their name. They typically lay 250–300 eggs per year, often continuing strong production for several seasons.
Adult hens are a soft fawn brown with a black necklace and tail feathers, while the roosters are larger and often display striking contrast in their plumage. The roos can also be raised for meat production, growing more slowly but to a good size.
Please note that this is a crossbreed, so offspring will not breed true.
